Why is my Wix renewal higher than year one?
Wix's sale price is for the first term only. Renewals bill at the plan's regular yearly price. The free domain voucher is first-year only too. A year-two bill can be double year one.
Wix says, "No, the discounted price is for the first year of service only. All subsequent renewals are at the regular yearly rate." (Promotions). The renewal article says "the discounted price is valid for the first year/month ONLY. All subsequent renewals are charged at the original price of the plan (without the discount)." (Using Wix promotions for Premium plan renewals). Billing says, "Any paid service that was purchased with a discount (e.g. during a sale) renews at the standard rate." (Wix Billing).
The 1-year free domain voucher "is only included with the first time purchase of a Premium plan. It is not included when renewing a plan or upgrading an existing plan." (wix.com/plans). A voucher domain "will renew at the standard rate after your first year."
Which is better, Wix or a self-hosted site?
It depends on what the site does. For a simple site of a handful of pages, self-hosting usually costs less: Wix plans run $204 to $1,908 a year at list price (verified November 4, 2026), while a static site on Cloudflare Pages' free plan costs little beyond the domain you already pay for. If you use Wix Bookings, Stores or Events daily, or edit often in the drag-and-drop editor, Wix is worth it. Wix has no site export, so leaving means rebuilding the pages.

Wix renewal cost by plan
On November 4, 2026, wix.com/plans showed US prices of Light $17, Core $29, Business $39, and Business Elite $159 per month. "Displayed prices are for yearly subscriptions, paid in full at the time of purchase." The yearly list price is that figure times 12. "Prices do not include applicable taxes."

On November 4, 2026, wix.com/plans showed "Save 50%" on Core, Business and Business Elite, with the note "Only valid for the initial term of yearly / multi-year subscriptions." The sale is time-limited. The year-one column is our arithmetic: half the yearly list price. Wix shows the final price on its purchase page. Prices exclude tax.
A free-voucher .com from Wix renews at $21.35 a year (Wix's blog, How much does it cost to buy a domain from Wix?, pricing current as of August 18, 2026). That page lists a .com at $7.90 the first year. The voucher is for a new domain on the first Premium purchase, so that first year is free. What the domain costs later is in Domain renewal cost. A Core site bought at 50% off with a free .com goes from $174 in year one to $348 + $21.35 = $369.35 in year two, before tax, business email or apps.
Three years at list price is the renewal times three: Light $612, Core $1,044, Business $1,404, Business Elite $5,724. If year one was at 50% off, the next two years are still at list: Core $870, Business $1,170, Business Elite $4,770. Light had no 50% badge, so three years stays $612. The table is the plan only.

The Wix billing details that matter
From Wix's own help center:
- Plans renew automatically. Plans "are set to renew automatically at the end of the subscription period" (Wix Billing).
- Yearly plans can be charged early. Yearly and multi-year plans are charged "Up to 3 weeks prior to your plan's expiration date (anniversary of your purchase)." Monthly plans are charged on the same date as expiration. Third-party apps are charged on that same date. Domains and business emails are charged 30 days prior (same page).
- You have to cancel before the payment date. "you must turn off auto renewal before your next payment date." The exact date is in the Upcoming payment section of Premium Subscriptions (Turning off auto renewal).
- Reminders start 30 days out. "Wix sends reminder emails starting 30 days before your payment is due" (same article).
- Sale prices don't last. "Any paid service that was purchased with a discount (e.g. during a sale) renews at the standard rate" (Wix Billing). "Promotions cannot be used to renew an existing Premium plan."
- Promo codes can't be used to renew. "No, the code is only valid for an initial purchase. You can't apply the discount code towards the renewal of an existing plan." A code can be used for an upgrade (Promotions).
- Promotions can't be applied to monthly plans. "No, promotions cannot be applied towards the purchase of a monthly plan. Only yearly plans are eligible." (same page).
- Several renewals can land as one charge. "We may consolidate your recurring payments for a site plan, domain, business email, and paid apps into one charge to avoid multiple transactions." That is why a renewal charge can look bigger than the plan price (Wix Billing).
- The free domain is a first-year gift. The voucher "is only included with the first time purchase of a Premium plan. It is not included when renewing a plan or upgrading an existing plan." Redeem it within 60 days. It can't renew an existing domain (wix.com/plans). It "will renew at the standard rate after your first year." Monthly plans do not offer the free domain voucher (Wix Billing).
- A renewal is outside the 14-day refund. The plans page says the 14-day full refund "applies to the initial upgrade to a Premium plan." The refund article limits that policy to new Premium or Studio plans. It does not apply to "a plan renewal" or "the upgrade of an existing plan" (Requesting a refund). "If you do not meet the requirements for the 14-day refund policy, but you believe you still deserve a refund, contact us and we'll review your request." The refund goes back to the same payment method. "allow up to 45 business days." "Domain purchases do not have a 14-day money back guarantee."
On a yearly plan, the charge can land up to 3 weeks before the expiration date. That payment date is the deadline.
How to see your exact Wix renewal charge

A domain price depends on the extension, local currency, the number of years, privacy protection, and local tax or VAT. The payment details page is the number Wix will charge (Price of Wix domain renewals).
What self-hosted costs for a simple site
"Self-hosted" here means your site is a set of files you own, served by a static host:

Since you pay for a domain either way, set it aside and compare what's left. The Wix columns are list price, with no first-year sale.

At list price, moving a Core site with the $99 automated move saves $945 over three years, and the move pays for itself in about 4 months. A Light site moved the same way saves $513 over three years. Those gaps use the list totals, not a first-year sale. Custom work has no public price. If you're comfortable doing it yourself, the gap is bigger. The catch: you can't export a Wix site
Wix says the site "needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers" and "does not support external hosting" (Wix help). The content is yours, but leaving means rebuilding:
- List every page, form and embed.
- Copy the text and download your original images.
- Rebuild as a small static site (by hand, with an AI assistant, or with us).
- Recreate the contact form and test it.
- Point your domain at the new host.
- Turn off auto-renew in Wix before the early charge date.

When a cancelled plan expires, the site "is not deleted; it simply returns to the free site version" (Requesting a refund). Once your domain points elsewhere, visitors see the new site.
How to cancel Wix renewal
- Go to Premium Subscriptions in your Wix account.
- Click the More Actions icon next to the plan, then Cancel Plan.
- Click Cancel Now, then confirm Cancel Now.
Source: Turning Off Auto Renewal. "you must turn off auto renewal before your next payment date." After the first 14 days, the plan stays active until the end of the term. Wix says, "To continue until the end of the subscription period, wait until the first 14 days have passed." Do it after your new site is live and before that payment date.
Inside the 14-day window for a first-time purchase or an upgrade, turning off auto renewal cancels immediately with a full refund.
You can turn auto renew back on any time before the end of the period. Open Premium Subscriptions, find the plan, and click Turn On.
After the plan expires, the site is still online. It "is still active and can be viewed online." The address reverts to the free Wix URL (siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress) and Wix ads appear, unless you unpublish the site or hide it from search.
If your domain is registered through Wix, decide separately whether to keep renewing it there or transfer it. Wix charges domains 30 days before they expire.
When Wix is worth it
- You use Wix Bookings, Stores, Events or other built-in business tools daily.
- You like the drag-and-drop editor and edit often.
- You don't want to think about where your site lives, and a list price of $204 to $468 a year is fine for that.
Set a renewal alert, move before you're charged
Most people find their Wix renewal date from the charge itself. Instead, look up the date today in Premium Subscriptions, in the Upcoming payment column. Subtract three weeks, and put that earlier date in your calendar. You can also paste the billing email into Renewal Watch. It reads the date from that text.
