How do I export a Wix website and leave?
It depends on the site. Wix does not export the site as HTML, so a simple portfolio or brochure site has to be rebuilt from the live pages, hosted somewhere else, and pointed at with your domain before you cancel. You can take contacts, CMS collections, and the images and videos you uploaded. If the site sells products, takes bookings, has member logins, or runs a large blog, staying on Wix is the better choice.
Leaving Wix is an order-of-operations problem. There is no button that hands you the site. Export the lists Wix will give you, copy the live pages, put the new site on a host you control, point the domain, and only then turn off auto-renewal. Do it before the payment date. On a yearly or multi-year plan that date can be up to three weeks before the plan actually expires.
This guide is for simple sites: portfolios, landing pages, and small-business brochure sites of about 10 pages. What a Wix plan costs per year is on Wix vs a self-hosted site. Yearly prices for other builders, and which ones let you keep the site, are in Wix alternatives. This page does not repeat those prices. Read your own billing page before you cancel. Why a Wix renewal can cost twice the first year is in Wix renewal cost.
What you can export, and what you cannot
Wix is plain about the site itself. From Exporting or embedding your Wix site elsewhere: "your site must run on Wix's servers." The same article says the content you build on Wix belongs to you, per Wix's Terms of Use, and that you can connect a domain and manage it with another provider. There is no site export and no HTML export. Leaving means rebuilding the pages, or copying what is already live.
What Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer export, next to this, is in Can you export your website?.
| What | Leaves with you? | What Wix actually allows |
|---|---|---|
| The site, as HTML | No | The site has to run on Wix's servers. Copy the live pages instead. |
| Blog posts | No | "Currently, it is not possible to export blog posts to other platforms." The RSS feed shows at most 20 of the newest posts. |
| Contacts | Yes, as CSV | Up to 50,000 at once, as a regular, Google, or Outlook CSV. Only the site owner can export. |
| A CMS collection | Yes, as CSV | Content Manager: open the collection, More Actions, Export to CSV. Time fields come out as UTC+0. |
| Images and videos you uploaded | Yes, by folder | From the Media Manager. Free Wix and Shutterstock files cannot be downloaded. You cannot download the whole library at once. |
Step 1: Export contacts, CMS, and your own media
Do this before you cancel anything. Cancelling does not delete the site, but you do not want to be hunting for a CSV in the last days before a charge.
Contacts. In your site's dashboard open Contacts → Import / Export → Export. Wix exports up to 50,000 contacts at once. Pick the regular CSV, the Google CSV, or the Outlook CSV. Only the site owner can run the export (Exporting your contacts).
CMS. Open CMS, open the collection, then More Actions → Export to CSV (Exporting content from your collection). If a field is a time, the file stores it as UTC+0. Convert those times when you import them somewhere else, or they will be hours off.
Media. In the Media Manager, download the images and videos you uploaded. Wix lets you select several files inside one folder. It does not offer a download of every file in the library at once. Free Wix media and Shutterstock media cannot be downloaded (Downloading files from the Media Manager). If a photo on the site is one of those, you need a replacement you actually own.
Blog. Skip the export button. There isn't one that works. Wix's help center says it is not possible to export blog posts to other platforms (Request exporting blog posts). The blog RSS feed is not a backup either: it can display only up to 20 of the most recent posts (Adding an RSS button). For a large blog, copy the posts while the site is still up, or stay on Wix. A handful of posts you can copy by hand.
Save the CSVs and the media somewhere that is not the Wix account.
Step 2: Rebuild the live pages
Because there is no Wix HTML export, the new site is a copy you make while the current site is still public:
- List every URL. Home, about, services, contact, and each blog post. Note forms and embeds (video, maps, a newsletter, a booking widget).
- Copy the words from the live pages, and use the original images you downloaded in step 1, not a screenshot.
- Rebuild the pages as files: HTML, CSS, and images. You can do that yourself, ask ChatGPT or any free AI to draft the pages from your text and screenshots, or have someone copy the live site for you.
- Replace the form. A Wix form does not come with the copy. Point the new form at a form handler and send yourself a test.
- Write down the old paths. You will need them for redirects. A Wix blog URL such as
/post/…should 301 to the new post. The new path does not have to match the old one.
For a simple site of about 10 pages, Eject copies the live pages into files you own. The move is $99 once. You host the files on free static hosting on your own account. The Wix site stays live until you switch the domain. Stores, bookings, member logins, and a large blog or CMS are outside that move. Not sure the site is simple enough? Run the free check.
Step 3: Host the files and add 301 redirects
A static host is enough for a brochure site. Cloudflare Pages says "All plans come with unlimited sites, seats, requests, and bandwidth" (pages.cloudflare.com).
Uploading without Git is Direct Upload (docs):
| Method | File cap | Per file |
|---|---|---|
| Drag and drop | 1,000 files | 25 MiB |
| Wrangler | 20,000 files | 25 MiB |
Check the pages.dev address before you touch DNS.
Then map the old Wix URLs to the new ones. Cloudflare Pages reads a _redirects file: up to 2,000 static redirects and 100 dynamic redirects, and the file supports 301 (Redirects). A 301 tells Google, and anyone with an old link, that the page moved. Do this for every URL you listed, including /post/… blog URLs that will not exist on the new site.
Read every new URL on the preview address before you point the domain.
Step 4: Point the domain first
Point the domain at the new host before you transfer the registration, and before you cancel Wix. Leave the plan paid until the new site answers on your domain. If something is wrong, point DNS back. Transferring the registration later, only if you want a different registrar, keeps that transfer optional and avoids downtime.
How you point it depends on the hostname (Cloudflare custom domains):
- Apex (example.com). The site has to be a Cloudflare zone, with the domain's nameservers pointed at Cloudflare.
- A subdomain (www.example.com). A CNAME is enough. The domain does not have to be a Cloudflare zone.
Add the hostname on the Pages project before you rely on it. If the domain is registered somewhere other than Wix, change DNS at that registrar. If Wix registered the domain, the registration can stay there. Wix says: "You can connect a domain purchased from Wix to any site, even if it's hosted on another platform," by editing the A and CNAME records in your Wix account (Connecting a Wix domain to an external site). The same article says: "If your host requires you to use its nameservers instead of pointing, you can change your NS records." An apex domain on Cloudflare Pages needs Cloudflare's nameservers, so change the NS records at Wix to Cloudflare's. After you switch to custom nameservers, DNS records are managed at Cloudflare, not in Wix. Wix says that if you use custom nameservers, "you must manage your DNS records with your DNS provider or domain host (not Wix)" (Managing DNS records in your Wix account). Cancelling the site plan does not cancel the domain. Those are separate subscriptions.
Watch the domain for a day or two. Confirm the form still delivers, and that an old /post/… URL lands on the new page with a 301.
Step 5: Transfer a Wix domain to Cloudflare, if you want to
Skip this step if Wix, or whoever registered the domain, should keep the registration. Pointing DNS does not transfer the domain. You already left Wix's hosting once the domain shows the new site.
If you do want Cloudflare Registrar, use Cloudflare's order (Transfer your domain to Cloudflare):
- Add the domain at Cloudflare and update the nameservers. That is the same move as step 4 for an apex domain.
- Unlock the domain at Wix.
- Request the auth code (Wix calls it an EPP code).
- Enter the code at Cloudflare and pay.
- Approve the transfer at Wix.
Cloudflare Registrar is at-cost, with no markup. Most transfers add one year from the current expiration. The hands-on part is about 30 minutes. The whole transfer can take up to 10 days. The domain must have been registered for at least 60 days, and it must not have been transferred in the last 60 days.
What a Wix domain costs after the free year is in Domain renewal cost.
On the Wix side, from Transferring your Wix domain away from Wix:
- Open Domains → Domain Actions → Transfer away from Wix → Transfer Domain → I Still Want to Transfer.
- Wix emails the EPP code to the registrant contact email. Check that inbox, including spam.
- The domain has to be unlocked. Turn off Private Registration first. Wix recommends doing that before the transfer.
- ICANN locks apply: 60 days after you buy the domain, 60 days after a registrant-contact change, and 60 days after a transfer. If one of those clocks is still running, the transfer waits.
- A transfer usually takes up to 7 days on Wix's clock. Cloudflare's outer bound is 10 days.
- Transferring disconnects the Wix site from the domain. That is safe only after the new site is already live on that domain.
- Business email needs its MX records added again after the transfer. Copy every mail record before you start, and put them on the DNS host that will serve the domain.
Domain purchases have no 14-day money-back guarantee (Requesting a refund for a Premium plan). A domain you just bought is not covered if you change your mind.
Step 6: Stop Wix auto-renewal after the new site is live
Cancel the Premium plan only after the domain is serving the new site, and before Wix tries to charge you.
Wix sends reminder emails starting 30 days before the payment. For yearly and multi-year plans, Wix tries the renewal payment up to 3 weeks before the plan expires. You have to turn auto-renewal off before that payment date, not before the expiration date printed on the plan (Turning off auto-renewal).
In Wix: Premium Subscriptions → More Actions → Cancel Plan → Cancel Now.
The click path for Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer, and what each one does to the site and the domain, is in How to cancel a website subscription.
Two clocks matter:
- Inside the first 14 days of a new Premium or Studio plan, turning auto-renewal off cancels the plan immediately and refunds it in full. Wait until those 14 days have passed if you want to keep the plan until the end of the term you already paid for.
- After 14 days, the plan stays active until the end of the billing cycle. Then the site reverts to the free siteprefix.wixsite.com address (your own prefix on wixsite.com), with Wix ads. The site is not deleted (Canceling a Premium plan).
The 14-day money-back is only for new Premium and Studio plans. It does not cover renewals or upgrades. It does not cover domain purchases.
Cancelling the site plan does not cancel the domain, business email, or app subscriptions. Cancel each of those on its own if you want them to stop. If you are keeping the domain at Wix, leave the domain subscription alone.
A timeline that works
Count back from the payment date, not from the day the plan expires. On a yearly plan those can be three weeks apart.
| When | Do this |
|---|---|
| As soon as you decide | Export contacts, CMS collections, and your own images and videos. Copy any blog posts. |
| Payment − 30 days | Inventory URLs. Start the rebuild. Wix reminder emails can start in this window. |
| Payment − 21 days | New site is on its preview URL. Forms work. 301s are written. |
| Before the payment date | Point the domain. Confirm the new site on the real domain. |
| After the new site is live, still before the payment | Premium Subscriptions → More Actions → Cancel Plan → Cancel Now. |
| End of the billing cycle | Wix falls back to the free wixsite.com address with ads. Visitors on your domain already see the new site. |
| Later, only if you want | Transfer the domain registration. Re-add MX records for business email. |
If you bought the plan less than 14 days ago and you want those days, wait until day 15 to cancel. Export and build during the wait. Cancelling early ends the plan the same day.
When you should stay on Wix
- You sell through Wix Stores, or you take bookings in Wix Bookings. Those tools do not come along in a static copy.
- Members log in. A simple file host does not replace Wix member areas.
- The blog or CMS is large. Blog posts cannot be exported, and the RSS feed stops at 20 posts. Copying hundreds of posts is a different project.
- You edit in the Wix editor every week and you want that editor.
None of that is a failure. Wix is good at the products it bundles. This guide is for the site that has not changed in months and is about to renew.
Keep editing after you leave
The usual worry is who changes the site after Wix is gone. The files are yours. You can ask ChatGPT, or any free AI, to change your hours or add a testimonial, then review the result and publish it. You do not need the Wix editor for a page of text and pictures.
Eject does the copy for a simple site: about 10 pages, $99 once, into files you own. You put them on free static hosting on your own account. The old site stays live until you switch the domain. It is not for a store, bookings, member logins, or a large blog or CMS.
Check the site: free check. Have the move done: move a Wix site. See the yearly math: Wix vs self-hosted.
FAQ
Can you export a Wix website to HTML? No. Wix says your site must run on Wix's servers. The content you build on Wix belongs to you, and you can connect a domain and manage it with another provider, but there is no site or HTML export. Leaving means rebuilding or copying the live pages.
Can I export Wix blog posts? No. Wix says: "Currently, it is not possible to export blog posts to other platforms." The blog RSS feed can display only up to 20 of the most recent posts, which is not a full export.
How do I transfer a Wix website to another host? Rebuild or copy the live pages, host the files, point the domain at the new host, and add 301 redirects from the old URLs, including /post/ blog URLs. Export contacts, CMS collections, and the images and videos you uploaded before you cancel. Cancel the Premium plan only after the new site is live and before the next payment date. Yearly and multi-year plans can be charged up to 3 weeks early.
How do I transfer a Wix domain to Cloudflare? Point the domain at the new host first. Transferring the registration is optional, and a transfer disconnects the Wix site. In Wix, open Domains, Domain Actions, Transfer away from Wix, Transfer Domain, then I Still Want to Transfer. Wix emails the EPP code to the registrant contact. Unlock the domain and turn off Private Registration first. ICANN locks the domain for 60 days after purchase, after a registrant-contact change, and after a transfer. Cloudflare Registrar is at-cost with no markup. Most transfers add one year from the current expiration. The active work is about 30 minutes, and the transfer can take up to 10 days. The domain must have been registered for at least 60 days and not transferred in the last 60 days. After the transfer, add your business email MX records again.
How do I stop Wix auto renewal? Open Premium Subscriptions, More Actions, Cancel Plan, then Cancel Now, before the next payment date. Wix sends reminder emails starting 30 days before payment, and for yearly and multi-year plans it tries the renewal payment up to 3 weeks before expiration. After the 14-day window, the plan stays active until the end of the billing cycle, then the site reverts to the free siteprefix.wixsite.com address with Wix ads. Cancelling the site plan does not cancel a domain, business email, or app subscription, and it does not delete the site. Inside the 14-day window, turning auto-renewal off cancels a new Premium or Studio plan immediately with a full refund. That 14-day money-back does not cover renewals, upgrades, or domain purchases. Wait until 14 days have passed if you want to keep the plan until the end of the term.
