Wix Alternatives: What They Cost, and Whether You Can Take the Site

What are the alternatives to Wix?

It depends on the site and on whether you want another subscription. On Wix's USD article, Light is $17 a month for a yearly subscription paid in full, which is 12 × $17, or $204 for the year. The site has to stay on Wix's servers, so moving means rebuilding the pages. For a small portfolio or brochure site, Carrd is the cheap one-page builder, WordPress is the free open-source software, and a static site you host yourself is the one that ends the renewal. Framer Basic and Webflow Basic cost less per year than Wix Light. US Squarespace Basic costs more. Shopify Basic costs the same per year as Wix Core, which is where a Wix store that takes payments starts.

What does a small site cost?

"Small site" here means a portfolio, a landing page, or a few business pages. Stores, scheduling, member logins, and a large CMS are a different job, and Wix is often the better tool for them. Domain registration is a separate bill on every row, except where a plan includes the first year. The Shopify row is the store comparison.

Yearly totals are 12 times the monthly price shown for yearly billing. Wix Light is 12 × $17, which is $204, from Wix's USD article. Wix's plans page says: "Prices and currency vary by location. USD prices displayed for reference only. Displayed prices are for yearly subscriptions, paid in full at the time of purchase." The purchase page is the number that matters for Wix. Framer Basic is 12 × $10, which is $120. Webflow Basic is 12 × $15, which is $180. Squarespace's $228 is the annual total in the US row of its pricing file, which is also 12 × $19. Twelve months at the US monthly Basic price of $25 is $300. That file lists 27 currencies, so a non-US Squarespace invoice will differ from the US row. Carrd's $19 is the yearly price printed on its plan page. Shopify Basic is 12 × $29, which is $348. On the yearly figures above, Carrd Pro Standard at $19 is less than Framer Basic at $120, which is less than Webflow Basic at $180, which is less than Wix Light at $204, which is less than Squarespace Basic at $228. Wix Core, Squarespace Core, and Shopify Basic on yearly billing each come to $348.

Can I use Wix for free?

Yes. Wix's article lists a free plan at $0. It includes web hosting and the drag-and-drop editor, on a Wix subdomain. The same article says the free plan comes with Wix ads and a non-customizable URL ending in wixsite.com.

A custom domain is on Light, free for one year with that plan. Light is the $204 yearly figure above.

People also search for something similar to Wix but free. The Wix free plan is that editor, with ads and a wixsite.com address. Carrd, Framer, and Webflow also publish free plans on their own domains, in the sections below. A custom domain on those three is a paid feature or a paid plan. WordPress software is free. Cloudflare Pages says you can start building for free. You still pay for a domain. A Wix site you have already built has to be rebuilt on any of these, because it has to run on Wix's servers.

What does Wix cost?

Wix's article says the prices below are for yearly subscriptions paid in full, and that additional subscription periods are available at different rates. This page lists those yearly figures. A separate month-to-month Wix price was not in the article.

From that article, as of October 2026:

• Free is $0. Web hosting, the drag-and-drop editor, and a Wix subdomain. Wix ads, and a URL ending in wixsite.com.
• Light is $17 a month, which is 12 × $17, or $204 for the year. A custom domain, free for one year. 2 GB of storage. 2 site collaborators.
• Core is $29 a month, which is 12 × $29, or $348 for the year. Accept payments, basic ecommerce, and scheduling. 50 GB of storage. The article says a store that takes payments starts with the Core plan at $29 per month.
• Business is $39 a month, which is 12 × $39, or $468 for the year. The standard ecommerce and marketing suite. 100 GB of storage.
• Business Elite is $159 a month, which is 12 × $159, or $1,908 for the year. Unlimited storage.

In the US, the same article says Wix Payments charges 2.9% of the transaction amount plus $0.30 for credit and debit cards.

The site stays on Wix. Wix's help center says the site "needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers" and that "the SaaS architecture does not support external hosting." The content you build on Wix belongs to you. You can connect a domain and manage it with another provider. Leaving means rebuilding the pages. The steps are in How to leave Wix.

Plans renew automatically. Yearly and multi-year plans can be charged up to 3 weeks before the plan's expiration date. A service bought during a sale renews at the standard rate. The 14-day refund applies to a new Premium or Studio site plan, and it does not apply to a renewal or an upgrade. The worked timing, and the 3-year totals, are in Wix vs self-hosted.

Wix is the better choice when you take bookings, run a store, or edit in the drag-and-drop editor most weeks. Core is the plan that includes scheduling and the plan where payments start. Stores and bookings are outside Eject's simple-site move.

Framer

On framer.com/pricing, with yearly billing selected, as of October 2026, the free plan is $0 on a Framer domain. Basic is $10 a month, described as "Creative personal sites," which is 12 × $10, or $120 for the year. Pro is $30 a month, which is 12 × $30, or $360 for the year. A custom domain is on the paid plans.

Framer's help center says Framer does not offer HTML export for self-hosting. A Wix project has to be rebuilt there. A longer price list is on Framer alternatives.

Framer Basic costs less per year than Wix Light. You still pay a builder, and Framer does not offer HTML export.

Squarespace

Squarespace's pricing.txt lists the US Basic row, as of October 2026, at $25 a month on monthly billing, $19 a month on annual billing, and $228 for the year. The file describes Basic as suitable for personal sites, portfolios, and simple business pages, and says a custom domain is free for one year on annual billing. US Core is $39 a month, or $29 a month on annual billing, which is 12 × $29, or $348 for the year. Twelve months at the monthly Core price of $39 is $468. The file lists 27 currencies. These are the US rows. A non-US invoice will differ.

The export is a WordPress file of some of the content. Squarespace's help center, updated October 9, 2026, says the .xml export is formatted for WordPress. It exports layout pages, one blog, text and image blocks, and gallery pages. It does not export album, cover, index, info, calendar, portfolio, or store pages, and it does not export style settings or custom CSS. Style settings and custom CSS stay on Squarespace. Squarespace fits if you like that editor. US Basic costs more per year than Wix Light. A Wix site still has to be rebuilt there.

Webflow

On webflow.com/pricing, as of October 2026, Starter is free on a webflow.io domain. The page says a paid Site plan is required to publish to a custom domain. Basic is the plan "for simple sites that don't need a CMS." It is $15 a month billed yearly, which is 12 × $15, or $180 for the year.

Code export is real, and it is a Workspace feature. Webflow's help center says export is on paid Workspace plans, and that Site plans do not include it. CMS content, user accounts, ecommerce, password protection, form processing, site search, localized content, and code components are not in the export. After export, the files work on your own server with no Webflow plan. A longer price list is on Webflow alternatives.

Webflow Basic costs less per year than Wix Light. A Wix site still has to be rebuilt there. The export, on a paid Workspace plan, leaves out the CMS.

Is WordPress cheaper than Wix?

The WordPress software is free, so the software is cheaper than Wix Light at $204 a year. wordpress.org/download offers the download and lists Free and Open among the things that come with it. The license page says the software is released under GPLv2 or later. The download page does not publish one hosting price, so this page does not invent one.

For an open source alternative to Wix, WordPress is the option checked for this page. Self-hosted means the files sit on a host you choose. You can edit them, move them, and back them up. The editor is a different product from Wix's drag-and-drop editor. A Wix site still has to be rebuilt. Squarespace's .xml file is meant to import to WordPress. This row is the WordPress software from wordpress.org.

Carrd

Carrd is the cheap end of the list, and it is built for one-page sites. As of October 2026, the homepage says "Build up to three sites per account and use all of Carrd's core features – for free." Custom domains are listed as a Pro feature.

From Carrd's Pro plans:

• Pro Lite is $9 a year. The page says it is for users who don't use custom domains.
• Pro Standard is $19 a year. The page calls it "by far the most popular." This is the custom-domain plan this page uses for a one-page site.
• Pro Plus is $30 a year more than Pro Standard.

Carrd Pro Standard, at $19 a year, is the cheaper builder when the site is one page on your own domain. A multi-page Wix site is a different size of project, and leaving Wix still means rebuilding.

Shopify, for a store

Shopify is the store row in the table above. On shopify.com/pricing, as of October 2026, Basic is $29 a month paid yearly, which is 12 × $29, or $348 for the year. Paid monthly, Basic is $39 a month. Twelve months at $39 is $468.

Wix Core is also 12 × $29, which is $348 for the year. Wix says a store that takes payments starts on that plan. Wix Business is 12 × $39, which is $468 for the year, the same total as twelve months of Shopify Basic at the monthly price. The cycles differ. Shopify's $39 is the month-to-month price. Wix's $39 is the monthly price of a yearly Business subscription.

In the US, Wix Payments charges 2.9% of the transaction amount plus $0.30. The Shopify pricing page checked for this post stated the plan prices above. A Shopify card fee was not in that check. The comparison here is the plan price.

Shopify fits a store. It is a poor fit for the question "what is cheaper than Wix Light," because Light is $204 a year and is the plan below the one where Wix payments start.

A static site you own

This is the path that ends the builder bill. As of October 2026, Cloudflare Pages says "Start building for free" and "All plans come with unlimited sites, seats, requests, and bandwidth." The limits page says Cloudflare Pages has a limit of 100 projects per account. For a portfolio or brochure site, hosting is $0 a year. You still pay your domain.

Someone still has to rebuild the pages. Wix's help center says the site needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers. You can do the rebuild yourself with an AI chatbot, or have it done once. Eject's price is a $99 one-time fee for a simple site of about 10 pages off Wix, and the same fee covers a simple Squarespace, Webflow, or Framer site. You own the files. After that you edit by asking ChatGPT or any free AI chatbot. The old site stays live until you switch the domain. Stores, bookings, member logins, and a large CMS are out of scope. Framer does not offer HTML export. A Wix site has to be rebuilt in Framer. Stay on Wix if you use scheduling, a store, or the Wix editor most weeks. Move toward Framer if you want that editor. If the goal is to stop paying a builder, neither subscription does that.

Webflow's code export is on a paid Workspace plan, and it leaves out CMS content. Site plans do not include export. Wix keeps the site on Wix's servers. Switching is a rebuild either way. It is worth it if you want Webflow's builder and you will pay for a Workspace plan to export the code. On the USD yearly figures, Basic costs less than Light.

Wix vs WordPress
